In 1957, renowned architect Ron Thom (Thompson, Berwick & Pratt) completed a new home for Horace and Mary Norman on a flat site within a steeply sloped North Vancouver neighbourhood. Employing a 40” x 80” structural module with pre-fabricated post-and-beam building techniques, Thom utilized standard sheets of plywood (inside and out), basic framing, flying box beams, large panes of glass, and deep overhanging eaves to create a modest forest pavilion. For its unique contribution to West Coast Modernism, it is recognized on the District of North Vancouver Community Heritage Register.

New renovations seek a gentle expansion of the home’s floor area for the creation of a primary suite and den, allowing its owners to age-in-place while providing enough room to host family. Adhering to the original structural module, the design captures the area of a carport within the existing footprint of the house and distinguishes itself in material and detail so as to emphasize the original architectural expression.
