Lady Rose
Nanaimo, BC
Single-Family Renovation
40 sq.ft.
Designed for family members with a tight budget, this project initially sought to correct some of the sins of the former owners, who undertook renovations to this classic BC Box-style basement suite, to varying degrees of… success?
The renovation gutted the previous works and reoriented the layout to improve circulation and function for both the bathroom and kitchen areas. The project was approached as a collaborative, collage-based project, with a view towards adaptive material reuse. The design was set up to evolve based on what elements might be available locally, allowing for flexibility and freedom to play with colour, texture, and materiality.
We combined found materials and gently used fixtures from the local Habitat Restore, and selected tile and lighting from clearance / end-of-stock suppliers. In addition to diverting materials from the landfill, this also left room in the project budget to specify more unexpected and playful design elements, such as Canadian-made gold plumbing fixtures, touches of Douglas fir, and (our favourite element of the reno) reeded glazing shower partitions that refract the light and create a truly ethereal shower experience.
And, importantly, Rufus (the dog) likes it too.
The result is a small-but-mighty bathroom renovation that reminds us that there is no project too small, and truly reflect our belief that thoughtful design and material (re)use can be accessible at any price point.
