Single-Family Dwelling
8,060 sq.ft.
Hargrave House is a new single-family home created as the beating heart for the next generation in a large grain farming operation in southwestern Manitoba. Designed for a young and growing family, the project combines a five bedroom, 4,000 sq.ft. single-family residence with a 4,060 sq.ft. workshop/garage, modelled off the concept of a “Shouse” or “Barndominium” – an efficient, hybrid, post-frame structure similar to a barn. The home is intended to be a place of solitude amongst the demanding daily life of farming as well as a social center for large family gatherings.
The home is built on an existing family farmstead, nestled into the eastern edge of a windbreak of deciduous and coniferous trees. On one end of a simple, rectilinear form, the living spaces are oriented to the daily cycles of farming and to the east, south, and western exposures. A wrap-around veranda provides much needed shade during the hottest days of summer, while the southern exposure allows for thermal heat gain during the most blistery of winter days.
Following on a multi-generational family tradition, the home was built between harvest cycles by the homeowners with extended family members.
